Ah, a question with many answers, it depends what you want to use the car for and if it’s an SE5 or SE6. Your going to need wheel spacers too, as the offsets are different to the 6” rims.
The standard size 185/80 x 14 tyres have a diameter of 652mm. With a 3.31:1 diff in 4th gear you’ll get 22.4mph per 1000rpm.
The 195/65 x 14 tyres mentioned above have a diameter of 610mm, so will lower the car by 21mm (without changing the suspension). With the same diff it will give 21 mph per 1000rpm in 4th, so will give slightly better acceleration. However, the tyre is designed for a 6J wheel, with the max rim with as 7J.
I used to race on 195/60 x 14 tyres, but on 6J rims. They have a diameter of 590mm, so will lower the car by 31mm. The will give a comparison of 20.3mph per 1000rpm, so better acceleration again. Also designed for a 6J rim with max 7J rim.
A 205/60 x 14 tyre has a diameter of 602mm, so will lower the car by 25mm, give 20.7mph per 1000rpm. Again designed for 6J, but max 7.5J. I can’t remember the 7”wolfie offsets compared to the 6”. I think the tyre fits on the front, the rear arches may be an issue, someone out here will be able to tell you.

I completely agree with Ben, I used to run 205/60R14s very happily and felt they were a good compromise (had 195/60R14s before that)
If you want close to original rideheight and gearing 205/70R14s come very close to the original 185R14s diameter.

Ben,thks for the info car is an Se5 that currently runs with 8/10mm spacers on the front as standard. When I had an Se6 and ran 205 on 6Js I had no problems with the fronts but can remember when fully loaded and towing a 500kg gross weight trailer I had some rubbing on rough roads ,so maybe 195/60/R14s would be my best bet. Oh and it is only for road use.I am not in any hurry to rush out and buy tyres just wanted to get a feel for what would be best.

205/70 x 14 is 644mm diameter, so as James says, pretty close to the 185/80 x 14.
I knew someone out there would have run 205/60 x 14, James is a good bet though, his car (SE5a) has been used & abused on road & track (in the nicest possible way of course).
Don't be put off bu 205 rubbing, as the aspect ratio is important. If you had an issue with 205/70 x 14, you may find 205/60 x 14 if all fine & dandy.

215 would be too wide for a standard wheel, so you’re back to checking offsets and clearance with bigger wheels - also, can you find decent tyres in 215/60x14?

Only the favourite tyre of those who like stretched tyres - an oddball Nankang.
I'll exclude the BFGoodrich T/A which suggests they're a tyre you'd find on something American usually...but that's all I found on a quick search.

Wasn't 195 X 70 once the most favoured available 14?BigBobPilot wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2017 9:11 pmAh, a question with many answers, it depends what you want to use the car for and if it’s an SE5 or SE6. Your going to need wheel spacers too, as the offsets are different to the 6” rims.

Do you have an example of a 185/80x14 that isn’t a van tyre, Chinese ditch finder or very expensive reproduction?

Looks like my link is for T rated tryes (up to 118mph) and the original was H rated (up to 130mph). Personally I dont see that as an issue - hands up them thats going to push their 40 year old classic car over the ton on the road nowdays
