Which Gearbox Do I Have

Post by Mr Bridger » Sun Jun 19, 2016 6:30 pm

All the pictures I can find of a Scimitar gearbox on the Internet show ones with external rods for the selector mechanism. However, the box in my non overdrive car do not have these. Is that right for this model? The box is cast iron and has two bolted cover plates on the top, one of which is at an angle rather than being parallel to the ground, if that makes sense.
Internet searches show similar looking gearboxes; the type 5 and the 2000E. If not the standard fit, I assume the gear ratios will be incorrect?
Thanks

The non-overdrive box does have internal selectors rather than the external rods.
I think from memory, it's closest to the type 5, no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong?

Yep - type 5. The 2000E (there are other variants depending upon ratios) has the bumps for the detention springs at the opposite end of the forward cover.

After 25 years of messing with Scimitars I only found out recently that the early (2 rod) overdrive box is the type 5 with a different rear casing for an external linkage and overdrive bolted on!

Thanks for the pictures Jim. Without going out and crawling under the car I can't be sure, but I reckon it's a Type 5. Is there any particular reason for a previous owner fitted one of these?

Standard fit on a non-overdrive Scimitar. You should have a (4 speed or auto) 3.07 ratio back axle (3.31 on the o/d) to compensate for the lower top gear.

Good evening Mr Bridger, the type 5 has the best feeling gear change of all the boxes fitted to Scims. There is a problem with the brittle white plastic sphere on the gear stick sometimes, it sits in the semi-sphere in the top of the box and is fixed to the gearstick with a spring steel tubular pin. Cracks can start around this and cause the plastic to break. The whole gearstick assembly is fastened by a coil spring under a pressed steel domed screw fitting with fingers around the outside which are bent down to lock it. Best o' luck, Crusty.

Good, I support our traditional traders but have machined a phosphor bronze one for the Racy Red Bakery Truck.

If the early 2 rod scimmy box is type 5 , would then you be able to bolt the rear of the type 5 to it to have the internal linkage box

Yes - it's called the type Z (as in the zodiac it was fitted to) with the 2 rod back end
