Diesel question, sorry

Post by DARK STAR » Mon May 30, 2016 5:47 pm

No1 son's Opel Meriva is playing up.
It is sometimes difficult or impossible to start when hot.
Obviously it is not because the coil is overheating ;)
Can diesel vaporise like petrol?
I know nothing whatsoever about turbo diesels but I suppose it has an electronic management system of some sort.
Has anybody any useful suggestions.
Mine would be to scrap it and buy a car but that is apparently not the right answer.

If it has an engine management box of electronic gubbins, I would suspect that first. Check the contacts/pins on the multi pin plug(if it has one). A diesel should(in theory) be easier to start hot than cold. They make better boat-anchors tha the Essex, by the way

Diesel won't vaporise like petrol.

Oldconn's advice above is spot on. I would start by looking for and cleaning any multi-pin plugs - it's easy and it may be the answer. After that, the engine management electronics get far too complex for my old head!

Yep! Had the same problem repeatedly on my old Rover 420 TDI. Cleaning the plugs would cure every problem for about a month. In the end I got fed-up and bought a Scimitar, apparently Princess Anne owns one so they can't be all that bad!

Also check that air is not entering the fuel line when hot.

Possibly a faulty EGR valve, mine went last week, took it to SAABTEC and they said that is it sits a certain way you'll never get the engine to fire, that's what may be happening, cheap enough to change (£35 for a new one), took me all of half an hour, 10 minutes of that was trying to get the plug undone, and didn't even get dirty, presumably your Meriva being a GM product has a similar engine to my 93?

SE4c rebuilding. SE5a similar it seems!

Could be the same engine - or family at least.

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.

Thanks again, as I said, I know nothing about diesels.

Oddly enough Geoff
If that works then sell it before the month is up
He is hoping to sell it this weekend, so if it starts for the occasion I (yes me) may not have to search a cure 8)
