Urgent; Shorter pulley belt for oval port engine

Post by RockerPhill » Tue May 24, 2016 2:02 pm

Hello all!

I'm very urgently after the shorter 3 pulley timing cover belt, as I'm heading to Lincolnshire on the 27th to fit Flora's new engine!

I've been informed helpfully by Terry Rickard et al that I can get one made at any motor factors, which I'm about to go and try. But I'd really like a back-up plan if anyone has one spare I can buy! I also don't know the length of it in order to get one made; does anyone know?

Thanks all! :D

It's a Gates 6233MC ; 1325mm long. Not the most common one these days when you look at what it's fitted to: https://www.gatesautocat.com/article/6233MC

Forgot to add - just about any motor factors will be able to get one the next day if they don't have one in stock themselves.

Errrrm.... I don't know the Gates numbers, but surely the 1325 is the 4-pulley one?

Maybe you're right Roger - I thought it was 1275 or so but figured I must be wrong

Here suggests there's all sorts being fitted/supplied: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29027 but it might be a 1275 after all...

Yep 1325 is the 4 pulley defo. I think 3 pulley is 1275. They are the lengths in mm. Motor factors don't make them of course I don't know where he got that idea.

Re Phil's other thread Gates 6233 is a 1325 x 9.5 mm. This whole thing can be a nightmare for the novice. The width can make a big difference to the perceived length requirement. You don't want it to sit too high in the pulley and again not down in the root. Replacement alternators may have different pulley widths and diameters. Power steering belts are in general wider for strength with a consequential wider pulley.

When I couldn't get the quite the right size for an old Land Rover, I visited my local farm equipment supplies shop - they had a huge range of belts for machinery and I was able to take a few out to the car park and try them for size, pay for one and return the rest. I found that although a belt may be marked as the 'correct' size it might not fit due to it's width and how it sat in the pulleys.

Gents you're fantastic! I'll take the water pump and crank pulley with me just in case where ever I go to try find one; I'm heading up there on the 27th so it's very touch and go! Eeeeep!

Just to confirm, I was out in the garage today and had a look at the mulberry car's belt (4-pulley, of course) and it is indeed a Gates 6233MC :)

Hello all!

Good news; I found a belt!

9.5mm by 1275mm.

A good friend works at a big motor factors called GMF here in South Wales, Newport. They supply parts for tractors too which is why they had this belt in stock! Chuffed!

Thanks so much everyone for the help!
