So who uses theirs in the winter?

Post by Chgperformance » Sat Nov 21, 2015 4:46 pm

I use most of my cars all year round. The galv chassis 3 wheelers i certainly do and i have one or two regals which i wont use on salty roads.

The GTE (5a) will be kept going through the winter this year but my 5 will be a summer car only. Too much blood and sweat gone into it so far!

My sprinter (56 plate) is the worst vehicle i have on icy roads. Slides everywhere!

So who else uses their Reliant through the winter and which one?

Well, I do use the GTC all through the winter, but that's no hardship really down here in the South of France! I actually put the hood up on her yesterday after a pleasant run out - but that was just to wash her and make sure the windows don't get creased. Don't you just hate a smug bastard!!

I used the SS1 Ti through last winter. I'll probably use the GTC through this one.

But when I say use, I don't actually mean as a daily

I have used my SS1s through the winter for many years now, not so regularly since I retired as they don't have to do the daily commute any more.

For longer journeys ( any time of year ) if my wife is also coming we have to use her car. While I can get her in an SS1 for up to 20 / 30 mile local trips a two or three hour drive would be a step too far for her.

Yep both coupe when I had it and GTE regularly used in winter mainly because the heaters start giving heat pretty quickly unlike my Diesel SAAB which likes to wait till I'm almost at work, also used the A35 as well last year

My only cars are the ones in my signature below, so I have no choice. They are all taxed all year round. The SS1 is my normal daily driver, used for anything and everything, the other two are used less in the winter, but I have always reckoned that the slight extra cost of paying the tax for the winter months, is offset by the lower risk of things seizing-up or otherwise suffering from lack of use, so I aim to take them out as regularly as possible, to get them warmed-through and functioning properly. :)

So Roger which do you think is the best on snow and ice. Our TI's have too much power - the Coupe is quite good as long as you keep the tank full or a lot of weight in the boot and the MB I have not tried as last winter was mild - I do have winter tyres for it though so it might be reasonable.

Its my fist year of ownership. but I took the Sabre Six to the New Years Day meeting at the Phoenix, Hartley Wintney, and I'll probably be there again this year; and I take it out weekly, Sunday mornings, to Reading and back, just to make sure everything still works. Of course, with global warming we haven't had decent snow for a couple of years here in the south, so nothing "interesting" in terms of challenging driving!

I use my Ti all year round and have not bothered to put hard top on since retiring. Soft top is still the original vinyl one and I don't want it to shrink any more!
However winter tyres and quaife LSD do help.

When I can get her running I use as often as I can. In the winter it tends to not overheat as much also :) An extra minute or two in the town traffic jams.

Yes, use my SE6A all year. The only exception is when the roads are salty, or I'm driving one of the Triumphs.
