Diff pinion oil seal

Post by Old and Slow » Mon Nov 16, 2015 4:37 pm

Can anyone recommend a source for the pinion oil seal - I think the Sabre Six is fitted with a 7HA diff (ignoring the axle shaft fixings etc, how can I tell whether the diff is a 7HA and not 5HA?)

Picture of the backplate will probably confirm..

Either way, probably easiest to speak to Nigel at QRG?

Hi Philip

I keep most oil seals in stock, do I take it you need a seal for a Straight 6 7HA ?.

It don`t say that in the subject heading?

I think you mean 4HA not 5HA? 5HA never used on our Reliants to my knowledge and unless its been changed your Sabre Six will have a 7HA.

Anyway
Easy way to tell – there are 2 bolts either side of the centre line on each side (4) fixing the axle cover. On a 7HA these are about 18.5 cm apart and on a 4HA about 22 cm.
I am pretty sure QRG have the 7HA ones. (hopeso as my Sabre 4 is leaking)

Thanks for all the feedback: excuse my fat fingers, the "4" on my keyboard is next to the "5" for some reason!
Next step - get underneath again, with the tape measure, thanks for the very useful info.
Lastly, yes it is a straight six, Mark, but I'll measure the diff first, just to be on the safe side, and then get back to you.

The distance between bolt heads is approx 19cm, certainly not as wide as 22cm, so it's safe to say it is a 7HA; I'll follow up with Mark to get a new seal. Thanks everyone for helping.

Diff pinion oil seal

Post by heathsabre » Tue Nov 07, 2017 3:38 pm

Hi Philip

Did you resolve this issue? I now have a leaking pinion oil seal on our “ new” Sabre. I’ll try QRG for the seal.

Diff pinion oil seal

Hi Tony,
Yes, I put a new seal in, but had to destroy the old one whilst removing it.
Here's a picture of it:

(picture title is wrong - this is the old seal)
It came from Autospin 0121 4721243 sales@autospin.co.uk I spoke to Debby; Part No. 28713762-d3 the size is OD 2.875", ID 1.375", Thick 0.625"
I also found a picture of the seal on the oilsealuk.co.uk website, I believe they can still make leather-based seals if that's what you want.
Good luck.

Diff pinion oil seal

Post by Old and Slow » Sat Nov 11, 2017 11:23 am

Hi Tony,
I thought I'd look through my files for the receipt for the seal, but it looks like I eventually bought it from QRG as they are the only receipts I can find.
They sent me Part No. 207782R which apparently is for the early type and it didn't fit.
The replacement part was 202463 which must have been the one I used.
Sorry for the confusion, I thought I'd kept meticulous records but it seems not.
Hope this helps.

Was your new seal a leather or modern rubberised one Philip?

I last did this job on the Sabre several years ago and used a leather one and it seals OK, but there must be modern ones available now. Just wondered.

Hi Chris,
If I remember correctly, I'm sure I soaked the seal before installing, so it must have been a leather one.
Perhaps checking with QRG what they can supply will confirm.
As implied above, I must start keeping better records! :?
