8 track adaptor

Post by scimjim » Wed Jun 18, 2014 9:09 am

I have an 8 track in 8 Ball, which I could play "normal" tapes in, if I bought an adaptor like this:

When it had a stereo/cassette player, I could plug in my iPhone using this type of adaptor:

Can you see where I'm going yet? :D

I'm sure that putting the two together would give a terrible quality sound (as neither are great on their own), so would it be simple enough to put a 3.5mm aux cable into the 8 track adaptor? Is it simply a case of picking up on the wiper contacts that it has inside?

Signal levels will be an issue at a guess? Having this issue with mine.

Rich has been delving head first into this - maybe worth a chat with him?

No, cassette only - I did think about buying a more modern one as I also have one of those transmitters but it looks like the only source is the US of A.

The rectangular block in the middle opening of the 8 track converter (pic 3) is an electromagnet, basically just the same as a headphone earpiece, so you could connect your headphone output of your mp3 player to it & bobs your uncle.

So, I need to piggyback the red and black going to the electromagnet - with twin core and a 3.5mm jack on the end?

I can't see enough on that shot but if you don't have a close up of the rear of the electromagnet I will have a look inside mine & see if its a stereo or mono type as that could dictate the wiring. I guess its just mono
Edit; if there is a screen on the red & black cable is it connected to the electromagnet? That would tell us what type it is

Had a closer look - no screens but there's a red, a white and two blacks going into the back of the electromagnet and a black that you can see in the first pic from the spring finger that pushes down on the EM. You can just see the red & black (and the one from the "finger") on the PCB

Image

The "fine tune" knob on the front of the unit uses a screw thread to move the EM left and right :-)

The 2 blacks from the EM should connect together at the circuit board & the screen of your stereo 3.5mm jack lead should connect there. The 2 inner wires of your lead should connect to the red & white. It shouldn't really matter which way around these go as all it will do is reverse the stereo image, but traditionally red is right & white is left.
PS my adaptor has no adjustment knob, yours must be the "luxury" version :)

Managed to test this yesterday and despite my soldering skills, it works!

Nice :) For optimum sound quality you could go through a miniature DPDT changeover switch to isolate the drive circuit of the cassette player, but thats a lot of extra fiddly soldering.

I'd have to change the speakers before I could get any improvement in sound quality :-)

I also have quit a good little speaker (boombar) that can be bluetooth or wired to my phone and doubles up as a hands free system, that will be used if needed.
