The shock absorber simply dampens the spring's rebound - the spring takes the weight, so for the same pothole, a 180lb spring on a GTE will deflect further than a 180lb spring on an SS1. To make the two examples rebound at the same frequency the GTE damper would need to be set harder - that's nothing to do with the spring dia but the vehicle's weight, the amount of deflection and the spring's "poundage" (which is composition, wire dia and number of coils).

not sure - you said "why go to a 2.25" on the 5a" then started comparing it to the weight of a small sports which is nothing to do with spring ID?

And the point I'm making is that the actual damper is more often than not, the same - the difference depends on which spring seats are screwed onto the external thread.

Useful info from another thread added for posterity:
Does anyone know what the correct distance between the eyes/mountings on a car riding at the correct height is

13.64 inches (346.4 mm)



Handy info if you want to make a solid replacement for the dampers to check camber and castor angles without spring/ dampers fitted (or to check your current setup for possible ride height issues).
