Rear oil seal leak

Post by nickm » Wed Jul 04, 2018 3:54 pm

I have just fired up my freshly rebuilt Essex and was over the moon as it sounds great, ticks over nicely
and holds spot on oil pressure.
My delight soon turned to despair as i noticed a significant oil leak coming from the bell housing area.
I am almost certain the rear oil seal is leaking as when I built it I put the carrier on after the sump and I
struggled to get it to fit.
I know I should have started again but i thought it be ok.
Does anyone know of anyone in the North East who would remove/refit the engine and fit the oil seal?
I am not sure I can face doing it again!
Nick

Rear oil seal leak

I can confirm that's not the right way to fit the rear seal carrier..so your guess is probably correct.

Rear oil seal leak

I jacked the Scim up at the front to have a closer look at the source of the leak and the oil fairly poured out at the rear.
I can't work out whether it is leaking from the rear of the sump or the rear oil seal.
Do you think the oil would pour from the rear oil seal just by tipping the car up[engine not running]?

Not sure it would come out through the seal, more likely the sump gasket to carrier joint.take the sump off and have a look, maybe the gasket got disturbed as you put the carrier on....

I blooming hope it's the gasket.
Will whip the sump off and have a look.

Rear oil seal leak

Took the sump off and it was the back end of the gasket.
I must have pushed it inwards when I struggled with the seal carrier.
all back together and no leaks.
Can anyone tell me whether roller tip rockers are noisier than standard because
the engine does sound more tappety than before?
