SE6 suspension query

Ok back from the workshop and this old fool had been trying to fit SE5 parts that he thought were SE6! No fool like an old fool! I have retrieved the SE6 parts from the scrap bin and will refurbish them. I have noted the need to swop the lower wishbone mounts to accept the manual steering. Classic one step forward, two back! But it keeps me out of the pub, mostly!

The Reliant letter explained the difference in use of the brackets between manual and PAS cars.

Roger i did not say they weren't the strengthened brackets (which they were), just that they were the se5 style. I am sure there are plenty of 6's with non reinforced lower brackets....i have a project GTC with them and it was built in '79..... who knows what a previous owner/"mechanics" may have done!

The "strengthened brackets" as referred to in the advisory notice only applied to the Se6-series brackets with the offset bolts. The traders now supply more strongly-made brackets to fit all varieties of GTE, but that doesn't mean you can use any kind, on any model of car.

My mulberry car was also built in 1979 - at that date the older style brackets were still being fitted, the strengthened design only came in during the production of the 6b/GTC, and as I mentioned, it was only in 1989 that Reliant had identified the need for them to be retrofitted, and issued the warning notice.

Steve. You also need to be aware that the 5 had a different size (smaller) outer front wheel bearing....you may just have a 5 stub axle that came with your "better condition set up" What appears to be a flat on the outer end of the stub axle is rather odd.....never seen that before. Also you need to be aware that the top damper brackets on the 6a were modified by having bigger holes; into these holes were fitted "spacers" The spacers are top hat shaped with the hat cylinder fitting into the hole (so quite short being the 1/16" thickness of the bracket) and the brim acting as a washer INSIDE the brackets between bracket and damper bush. Hence the 6a damper bushes are 1/8 inch shorter than the 5. This prevents the damper inner metal bush from wearing a little circle in the brackets and the rubber wearing the brackets....spacers easier to change than welded on brackets. (When I was new and looking into dampers this was one of the least appreciated bits of info by all damper manufacturers who thought all bushes were the larger by 1/8" 5 type. Protech made my top bushes the correct size to fit their dampers using a Jaguar bush with inserts.

You really need to get hold of the official workshop manual CD which should also have the Reliant service bulletins and spares catalogue which show the modifications that occurred over the years. It is too often assumed that all Scimitar GTE are the same......you are beginning to find that is not so. The biggest difference being between 5 and 6..........size and Girling to Lockheed brake change etc.
You now have days of catching up reading on the forum :)

Stevey. You will also notice in the diagram posted by Peter the spacers..(look like ordinary washers) ..item 16..... that fit between bottom bracket and wishbone......they are only required by the power steering set up......very subtle difference. I measured them as 0.13 inches thick when I was seeing to my GTC, power steering front end (same as 6a).
The steering lock stop (the bit that restricts the lock of the wheels from side to side).......the power steering has the lock stop built into the steering rack; the manual system has a small cylinder of metal bolted to the trunnion (though modern aftermarket ones may have "lock stops" cast in??

SE6 suspension query

Hi everyone, sorry for my tardiness in replying and updating you. I have spent the last few weeks refurbishing my SE6 parts and with the help of Queensberry road garage the front end is all boxed up and fitting well, no interference issues, just sitting high which will bed itself in out on the road. I am now on to repairing the chassis rust before embarking on the rear end.

Stevey I have a piece of professional apparatus that will measure caster and camber angles if you are any where near NW Devon.......welcome to come and use it.

Dennis I think this is the flat on the 1/12" unf thread that the D washer slides over for the castellated lock nut to push against for the bearing adjustment.
