SS1 Door Exterior Window Seal

Post by AllingtonGT » Mon Jul 17, 2017 9:31 am

Just having some paint correction on the drivers door of the silver SS1.

Rich at Rich's Restos in Bristol sent a picture this morning showing that as he attempted to lift the rubber out of the way, the edge has broken away. The rest of the rubber is quite cracked so a good chance to replace them.

I'll do a search on here, call AJL and Nigel, but thought I'd ask whether anyone has bought the same or if unavailable, what is a suitable replacement?

Will post the picture asap.

Thanks Geoff

In searching the forum this one at Woolies has been suggested previously. Don't have a car to measure the gaps right now. Am continuing the search.

Yep, just the usual from Woolies trim does the job fine.

If you are having spray work done, I would certainly be having the weathstrips removed and replacing them. You'll need some peel rivets to refit. I get mine from "Fixings Fasteners Wales" who do good sized packs at a fair price and happen to be a customer of mine also.

Fairly sure I used 4.0x12mm, but perhaps go for 4.0x16mm. Choice of black if you are feeling swanky. Worth punching the centres through after fitting to prevent the chance of anything scratching the glass.

The hardest part of fitting is getting the seal to follow the kick up at the back edge of the door. You can snip into the lower structure / rail , but as it's plastic without and metal as per the original, I found localised heating with an air gun allowed the section to be eased round and "stretch" the rail to suit.

Thanks to all for their input, insight and assistance. As ever with these jobs that proved to be only the first part of the problem.

Now seeking the quarterlight frame tree.

In the same field, with the unobtanium :-)

I have a box full of rotten frames if you need repair sections. I also have alloy templates for f&r strengthening plates.

I believe I warmed mine to the point where they were almost floppy which made it really easy to form them into shape. Measure twice cut once! Good luck :)

at least only the bottom edge gone, that can be faked up/repaired by folding a piece of 18SWG galv steel and bolting into place

Whatever happened to the SS frames - there must be the numbers wanted to make them feasible to produce now. same goes for the 6's frames.
