Can anyone recommend a way to clean brushes after using POR-15? I have tried using the thinners from the same company, which keeps the brush ok for me to use it in a second coat a few hours later, but the next day it goes hard and I have to throw it away. I do have a huge stack of brushes, but it seems a bit wasteful to keep throwing them away.

Max

You have my sympathy, my 5a was vandalised a few years back (the wing was kicked in causing major crazing and damage), I found blood on the car, it was DNA tested, I gave a full statement covering the damage and the likely rebuild costs, a man was arrested, charged and convicted, I received a letter from the courts saying that I was to be awarded £50 for the damaged wing mirror on my Renault Simitar!!!!

They couldn't even be bothered to read my statement properly to read about the estimated £1500 worth of damage to the wing, or get the car right

Re your missing badges, you can, as far as I can remember, get a new Reliant badge for your nose cone from QRG

best of luck sourcing the rest, I'm sure if any of us see them for sale we'll let you know

cheers, Matt

Good afternoon everybody,

Please excuse the mass email but with the amount of busyness in my life at the moment this is the easiest way to protect my sanity (as opposed to ringing or emailing everyone individually)

Over the past 6 months or so, I have been badgering people on behalf of the NEC show committee (grand title but it's really just Dave Poole as Events Organiser, myself as Coupe Registrar and Steve Cork as GTC Registrar) to get a list of GT Coupe's together so we could choose the show cars for this years NEC classic car show.

I've had a good number of people asking to be considered and as a result, the decision has not been an easy one to make. I understand that volunteers who will give up their car for 4 days are hard to come by and was amazed to be oversubscribed with offers of cars. I thank all of you for answering my call.

The downside of having more volunteers than spaces is that any decision I make will undoubtedly upset some people and make others overjoyed. I hope that all of you who were not chosen will not take it personally, I had to choose the very best cars for this annual opportunity to show ourselves off to a captive audience of classic car fans (and potential new club members and owners) and unfortunately can only have space for 3 Coupes (there will be 2 GTC's too).

I have spoken at length with Dave and Steve and we agreed unanimously that we should have a racing/sprint car as these always draw in the crowds with their obvious WOW factor, we also agreed that we should have a standard car (or as reasonably standard as you can expect after 45 years of care) and (a little embarrassingly) it was agreed that we should have my BUE 441B as it is the first Reliant Scimitar GT registered and was one of a pair of Earls Court Motor Show cars (embarrassing as it feels a little like I've bagged one of the spots just because I'm helping to organise things, this isn't the case though, honest).

Based upon that framework, we approached suitable owners and have decided on the following coupes to represent the club at the 2010 NEC Classic Car Show

* Trevor Shortt's 'Red Rocket' sprint car - this car has been chosen as it's in immaculate condition and super modified so will add the WOW factor we (and past stand organisers) agreed was needed

* Andrew Collins' Red SE4a - this car has been chosen as it is a concours winner and will offer a 'before and after' comparison with Trevors red sprint car as it's reasonably standard (apart from sensible upgrades)

* Matt Greenly's Gold SE4 - this car has been chosen because it is the oldest surviving Scimitar GT and the first Reliant Scimitar GT car built and registered (and is in good condition too)

As I've said earlier, this decision has been a horrible one to make as it's meant turning down offers of accomplished rally cars, other concours prize winners and generally very well presented and well loved cars but I hope you'll all appreciate that some owners were always going to be a bit disappointed. If anyone is really miffed then please remember that I have made the final decision in consultation with, but ultimately on behalf of Dave Poole, if you want to vent at someone then I have broad shoulders.

I would like to thank those of you who made it clear to me that even if you did not make the final 3 you would happily act as a standby in case of a disaster with any of the three main cars, this is a very helpful offer and I'm eternally grateful for giving me a plan B. In the nicest possible way I hope I don't need it

I hope that all you coupe owners will be able to come along to the NEC over the weekend of the 12th - 14th November 2010 and help us celebrate the 45th birthday of the Reliant Scimitar GT Coupe, we plan on it being an excellent stand and hope to bring more people into the club and show them that a Scimitar, be it a GT, GTC or any of our wonderful Reliant sportscars, is a very wise choice of classic car.

Tickets can be bought in advance and hopefully the usual club discounts will apply (see SLICE for details nearer the time)

thanks again for all the offers of help and apologies for not being able to accept all those offers

take care all, Matt Greenly

I'm sure you can get mild steel exhausts quite easily, but getting *correct* ones may take a bit more effort. My John Cheesman stainless system has the correct original-type slanted cut-off on the tailpipes (so looks a lot more authentic than most, externally), but like most systems I've seen doesn't have the original cross section to the rear boxes, as I suspect most aftermarket mild steel ones wouldn't either. The tailpipe should be chromed as well. It's not just a question of material.

The problem I see is that if you have a list of "non-standard items to mark down" then shouldn't that logically include things like paint and interior? If you mark down cars for such items as stainless exhausts but don't mark them down for resprayed paint, then you're going to end up with a situation where the concours is basically a competion between QRG's, GW's, etc, etc, spray or trim workshops.

Changing the subject slightly, I have Koni dampers. Does that mean I'm marked down for non-originality? or marked up because they're much cleaner than average? or am I wasting my time keeping them clean because the judging doesn't go that far, so any crusty old thing would do? They are at least partially visible to a kneeling viewer (kneeling to check the exhaust? ), so how far should the judging extend?

....Roger

I own proper 4x4's too. My first car in fact (although technically it was a selectable 4x4) was a 1969 Land Rover Airportable. Which I have rebuilt and would not consider taking it off road. I drive a Series One Discovery as my daily motor now as a good one will look after you. They are cheap on parts and tend to go on for a long while, if it has been looked after of course.
Still, I wouldn't consider taking that one off road either.
These modern 4x4's and their various gizmo's and electronic gadgetry aren't taken off road for slightly differet reasons. Look at entry and exit angles and a little thing that's called "ground clearance". They are not really 4x4's, they are simply Gucci overalls.
Mind you you could say what's the point but, by the same logic what's the point of a Supercar? They too are restricted to legal road speeds so can't in reality go faster than cheap escort. Also, the sort of people who drive these cars badly and park even worse will, no doubt drive and park equally badly no matter what they drive. That's not the cars fault, it's the dipstick behind the wheel.

I really can't see what anybody has against them unless they're inconsiderately driven or used. We live in a free country and therefore are free to make certain choices. I don't have and have never had a big 4x4, but I don't begrudge anyone their right to choose such a vehicle should they so wish. I would agree that in some circumstances it would appear to be an unnecessary and bizarre choice, but the owner has the right to choose. How would we all feel if the media decided to villify classic car ownership and we came under pressure for our choice to run one?

I think we're regulated enough without telling people which cars they can and can't choose .

I agree we've gone a little off topic here, but in a final effort to defend myself...............

Having a view that we are over regulated does not in anyway imply that I am against all regulations. H&S regulations are on the whole pretty sound and I am a fan of many of them (it gives me a living ). In my view this is not over regulation, they are protecting the interests of the many and in particular the innocent person who wants to do their days work safely and go home in one piece.

We have regulation to ensure that machinery and work equipment is used safely, we have regulation to ensure that our cars are used safely. It is the time when things aren't used safely that problems occur. Some 4x4s aren't used or operated safely, and I can see that this leads people hating them (though I feel that some of this is a media invention), likewise some Citoen Saxos aren't used safely, but the media haven't jumped on this yet !

Over regulation usually occurs when the government has a knee jerk reaction to a problem that is suddenly apparant. Take for example the banning of the sale of beef on the bone during the BSE scare, changes to airport security or rules telling me when I can take my kids on holiay from school. Some of the changes work, others don't (I'll let you decide). I am all for regulations that bring genuine improvement to peoples lives, but not for knee jerk nanny state regulation. Much H&S regulation is well researched and takes years to plan, only Government knee jerk interference upsets the apple cart.

And finally a simple question. New drivers are now required to take an extra test if they wish to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes or want to tow a trailer, should this be extended to 4x4s over a certain length or weight ? (I will not give you my opinion just yet).

I've kept out of this so far, but I now have a reason to jump in...

In my (limited) experience much of what is claimed to be H&S regulation isn't, rather it's an over reaction to sensible regulation due to fear of the consequences of someone being hurt. As an example, someone using their own equipment to clear paths of snow for the local community. If they clear the paths without Local Authority approval, they are personally liable if someone falls or is injured as a result of their work, whereas if the LA approves their actions, the LA can be seen as liable. In addition the LA can't be sure that the private indiviual concerned won't do something that is potentially dangerous (don't tell me that it's common sense, I watched someone clear the road outside his bodyshop by pouring what I assume was thinners over the road and setting light to it, ignoring the fact that cars were still driving over the top).

As far as driving is concerned, I think new drivers should have a probation period on a car with limited power (or continue under supervision if a higher power vehicle) rather than single out particular types of vehicle. As far as towing is concerned, I have been towing for 30+ years, but my first experience was dangerous (incorrectly loaded and too much speed), and I fully agree with an additional test.

Final point, it seems to me that we are all selective about the regulation we support and those we see as an infringement of liberty. Why should we be free to drive whatever car we want? (except of course I want to be able to drive my Scimitar - I'm not immune to the double standards) Why do we bitch about speed cameras (they only enforce an existing law, but enforcement of that law is seen as an infringement our our freedom to break it) and as an ex teacher, I object strongly to the idea that you can take your children out of school when you choose to go on holiday and that the rule is an infringement of your liberty (we all have raw nerves where our careers are concerned).

There are rules we like and those that we don't. So by saying I agree with much H&S law, does not necessarily mean I can't make a statement such as "I think we're regulated enough without telling people which cars they can and can't choose".

The three subjects I chose to mention are mixed bag that at times have angered me and at other times I've been inclined to agree with (I was hoping we'd perhaps have a Butcher and a Security expert to offer their opinions too ). The "kids out of school" is an interesting one that I have discussed with many teachers (we have several teachers in my family!), I can see both sides of the argument but as usual rules were imposed for the lowest common denominator and not for the intelligent parent who wouldn't dream of taking their child out of school if it were to affect their child's education in any way. (A whole debate on its' own ) Which I know raises the same questions about H&S law (you just can't win whatever you say........ )

It's a good job we don't all agree on the same the things, we'd have nothing to talk about on here

Also it is far more expensive to book holidays during normal summer school break weeks simply because of the higher demand.
Recently I've found that, when encountering a new production model car, more and more often I find myself asking this question: Are the current crop of car stylists having a laugh at the car-buying public? I think that attractiveness, in a car, is pretty universal in that a car that looks good to one person, looks good to most people. What is being produced by the car manufacturers, at the moment, doesn't. I applaud originality and I can appreciate quirkiness, but did these people learn their design skills using Lego? It really irritates me to hear cars that could double as building bricks being described as 'stylish' or 'sporty'. Do others agree, and which do you think are the worst offenders?

I think you would be best advised to try and get it working and on the road with the existing engine. We hear of so many abandoned projects where the car gets completely dismantled and due to the time and money it takes to do a major conversion the owner gets disillusioned. So while your enthusiasm is on a high try to take the shortest route to a working car and then look to a rolling improvement schedule. We need the youngsters to keep these cars going. Best of luck.
Hi Jim

I am now the proud owner of a GTE SE5a and a new forum member. The car details are as follows:

Registration XAB 400M

Chassis Number 933314

Engine Number SC7059

Body colour BLUE

Year of manufacture 1973

Any modifications? EVERYTHING APPEARS ORIGINAL! (apart from new water pump, petrol pump, servo, coil and points of course)

From the check that I ran, I am the 9th owner and have evidence, i.e. old MOTs from '88, that show her to have a genuine mileage of 55,805.

She now lives in West Sussex, will be a regular visitor to Goodwood Circuit and I'm looking forward to many miles of happy grand touring!

Best wishes

Stuart
