So I adjusted them a bit tighter than stated in the manual.
Cold engine inlet 0.010inch, exhaust 0.18inch. Seems to be better but still ticking noise.
So, will I adjust them even tighter or what else could be wrong there?

I live in Lincolnshire and have the luxury of space and a good selection of specialist help. Local shot blaster/Painter/Exhaust fabricator and excellent welders due to the agricultural machinary in this green and pleasant County, shame my wallet isn't so healthy. However there does seem to be a shortage of Scimitar owners in relation to the strong classic car scene here, I have seen the odd Scimitar when the sun shines.
My SS1 is a recommissioning job on mechanics and elctrical. Not sure which are bodged or factory finish. Bodywise the car is in good nick and it has the galvinised chassis. I have owned several X/9 which gives me good grounding for poor electrics (oooh nice pun). I am tempted to turn the car into a road/race machine as I am still in two minds over its looks (Wife will want me to sell it unless I can justify having it) and build quality. It will never win against Italian stuff in the looks department but could turn heads as a mild racer with purpose if I can get the fuel injection system to work. I Haven't pointed out to the Wife that it only has two seats... doh!

Back axle off? Blimey thats a job and a half, it was bad enough changing the rear axle bearings. Not sure what my ratio is, but its a four speed manul NON overdrive with the earlier type back axle, so suits the roads around here like a dream. Not so great on the motorway, but there arent any around here anyway. Giving it the bean rounds here its briliant, plus the gear change i find is smoother than the 4 speed OD.

Once your car is up and running feel free to pop over to Newtown, always up for chat about cars, with a beer. Or just a random drive for the sake it, which is what i was doing the other day, 40 mile round trip, cos i can. so I can get rid of the awful 4.375:1 ratio & get a more relaxing 3.23:1. Its going ok but I have to wait now for bearings & seals etc to arrive so it may take some time yet. The colour just isnt as white as id expected. Perhaps in my head i was thinking of ice white like the old 80`s RS Turbos? But to be fair 5 litres synthetic paint, primmer and harder for £80 so i cant complain to much. Iam hoping once its been polished a few times it should get whiter :D

Good luck with the axle re-build. I had a mare of a job re-building the rear axle on mine. I couldnt get the bearings off the half shafts, had to get them pressed out by Welshpool Engineering @ 180 tons of pressure. They were siezed rock solid. I wouldnt change the ratio though, its great fun around here. It does make it thirsty on the motorway though due to the high revs, but last time i got towed home so that saved me a few quid :lol:

Well the petrol warning one works and the fan light came on intermittently first time I drove it home Tues...now doesnt work, tested it and theres a circuit in the bulb and .3 (or is it 3?) volts getting to the terminals. Was gonna take the brake one out and swop over......just remembered to test the brake light for example could I touch the terminals together on top of the fluid cylinder??

I need to get on with some work today and stop f*erking around with this bl**dy car!!

I converted my se6a to Accaspark electronic ign. and left the ballast resistor and ballast coil in situe .

I've owned 6 (7 now!) classics and have done lots of work on all of them BUT have never paid to have a car sprayed. Its a big decision I guess.

I dont (DONT!) want a concours car by any stretch of the imagination for a few reasons, mainly as it wont be garaged, at least not for now. A tidy + clean and fully working motor is ALL I want.....SO:

Taking into account I'm a self employed geezer (musician) and really aint got bucks to throw at the wall etc etc ....AND taking into account it'll be left outside + NOT garaged and that I can live with a few imperfections here and there and taking into account its currently VW white......would people think I'm mad wanting it black??

I really want a black Scimitar I think they look wonderful AND I dont care if it shows up some bad bits....MATT black would be the one NOT too shiny. SO:

I guess a TOP sprayer would want to take all the glass out and engine bits in the way? I can live with a white engine bay. I can live with a 'blow over' i.e. leaving the glass in and making it as cost effective as possible.

I'd be very happy paying a Scimitar enthusiast who knows how to spray!

Gloss black of course will show every spec and look awful unless freshly cleaned.
You might get away with a blowover but to be honest the whole car needs sanding back a bit to make sure the new paint doesnt peel off, the big cost is time & labour. A matt finish saves all the flatting-down and polishing time-effort.

Removing the rear hatch and body seals is easy, and subject to condition of the existing side seals (i.e. can you re-use them) I would take the rear side windows out as well, even if you leave the front screen in place. It will be difficult to mask off around the side windows easily. You will get a better finish with them out of the way and it isn't a difficult job to put them back in so long as the original seals are decent and fit ok.

Could see it in white with a matt black bonnet (very seventies). However if you want all matt black might be worth pricing up a vinyl wrap instead of a repaint?

And I finally found : worn T° sender unit.

Fortunately, I had just bought one spare from QRG.
I've changed it and now T° gauge was indicating just 90°C when driving, as it was before.
95 to 100°C when the engine was running, car stopped for 15 minutes.
So, conclusion : a sender can give a wrong T°from a day to another, it's not just a on/off system.
(Once again, I've learnt something new today ! :oops: :lol: )
Now that it is solved, I can go back to the other works and try to finish them !

Why the car is running much better like this ?

To sum up :
-with the strobe, the mark on pulley was perfectly aligned with the 14° mark.
-as I've put a K&N filter I tried to play with the advance.
-instantly, when I moved the dizzy the revs got higher !
-I is now at approx 20° BTDC (very close to the thermostat housing) and the car is running better, seems that I have higher mpg too !
-no pinking.

I've turned the dizzy to make it 14° BTDC, but the engine was not sounding very well. It was even a bit more difficult to start it afterwards.
So I made the choice to go for a kind of average : 16°
I've not succeeded in erasing the little hole I have when reving suddenly.

The only definitive method of checking the timing marks is to find Cyl 1 TDC on compression then note where the timing mark is. It's hard to imagine a keyed pulley being in the wrong place. Advancing at idle normally improves idle speed & makes the engine smoother. With a mechanical advance system timing is a compromise: too much static advance will make it hard to start & once the centrifugal advance kicks in the engine might pink. To test a new static timing get the engine up to working temperature then try applying full throttle at around 20mph in 4th. Listen to the engine until it's past 3000rpm (full advance) & if it doesn't pink try applying full throttle from a steady 50mph cruise (full centrifugal + full vac advance). Morning all -

When I stripped mine down, I had it on pretty good authority (local old school mechanic who ran a scimitar back in the day, and also David Manners)that the manual trunnions were the same as TR6. The uprights are as well - but I can't remember if that was just manual or PAS as well.

The only reason I didn't buy TR6 trunnions were I just bought them all from one place at the same time (QRG) in the end.

I don't know for certain about the stub axle though, sorry.

Before my 6B went in for respray I bought a near perfect condition passenger side door mirror - the car never had one originally. Now all resprayed and put back together, I find it's impossible to see out of this mirror unless you sit in the passenger seat! The conclusion is that it must have come off a left hand drive car. The remote adjuster will not allow any further travel.

Any ideas anyone?
