Ians GTC rebuild. And now with MOT

I've been searching back through this thread, and on page three I found a photo of the engine and box. I've enlarged a portion and it looks like this: Dipstick.jpg Now I've never seen a "red dipstick" car, but is it literally just the dipstick that's red, or the tube as well? If it was just the dip...

Ians GTC rebuild. And now with MOT

Went out in the garage last night and checked the oil.....wrong stuff used. As mine has a red dipstick I used DexronII. Should have used ATF 33 (black dipstick). It would appear, as Phil wondered, that the dipstick had been changed at sometime in the past. Looks like a bit work required from undern...

Then slowed right down and the change down was really harsh. Just a thought but what type of fluid has it got in it? Went out in the garage last night and checked the oil.....wrong stuff used. As mine has a red dipstick I used DexronII. Should have used ATF 33 (black dipstick). It would appear, as ...

Yor are right Phil mine is a 1980 model. I am assuming the gearbox is original as there is no record in the pile of history that came with the car to suggest it has been changed. Maybe it is the wrong oil in there. I dont know what would happen if the oil is incorrect.

I hope so Roger. I have ATF type Q. I am assumimng that is correct for the C3 with a red dipstick. Very confusing when trying to get the correct grade of oil. The main problem being a lot of motor factors just stock dexron grades for later cars.

Guy what were the symptoms of your gearbox that led you to change the O rings? Had a mess around with the car on saturday and on a run up a long road near us she lurched into top and boy did that engine go. Up to 80 in no time at all. She never picked up like that before. Me thinks the engine rebuil...

It can be shifted in 1 & 2 but will not work when I engage (or try to) D. What drive I have is very jerky. Reverse was working sort of, when I put it in the garage. As for taking it apart, that is a dark art and not for me. I would rather have the whole box done. Ive done manual gearboxes in the pas...

Disaster.. After getting an MOT and looking forward to driving her in what remains of the good weather, the gearbox has decided to pack up. Not completely but wont change gear. Ive checked the oil level-ok and the vacuum pipe- also ok. So it only leaves the option of dropping the box and getting a r...

Finally she now has an MOT. Just need to get home and put her in the garage.....they have started a programme of road re-surfacing here. Tar and chippings everywhere. Just a few more jobs to do, but they can wait. Will be nice to drive her in the sun with the roof down. Its been 2 years since that l...

Just another thought. Did you overhaul your calipers after you fitted your new discs? If that was the case it could be the sticking caliper getting hot on the disc may have caused it to buckle slightly with heat soak . You say a lot of motorway use. Plenty of chance to get hot and then stopping , a ...

Have you checked your discs are not buckled? It doesnt take much to feel the effect. You stated you have a variation in disc thickness. By how much do they vary? You can also check that the disc is seated correctly on the hub ie no crap behind them ( the 2 mating faces) .
