Overdrive removal

No need! Undo the filler plug; feed down a bit of garden hose with a funnel at the back of the open bonnet, push into the filler and gently pour fresh oil down into the box. OK, you will always lose a little bit of oil, but surprisingly little. Fastest pit-stop so far about 6 minutes!

Overdrive removal

That's (almost) thought transfer (spooky!). I was about to post somewhat shamefacedly (does that exist as a word?), to ask about overdrive maintenance. My overdrive and gearbox on the GTC leak like a sieve too. I top it up every two or three months, which I suppose is good for the box - nice fresh o...

Bonnet woes

That's what I've done on the GTC. Just a bit of string to behind the headlight...... Somehow seems in keeping with the general engineering ethos of the car!!

Too old to drive?.......

Cannonball! Wow! The NHS gets so much bad press - and yet the vast majority of users think it's great. The staff in hospitals must get SO p.ss.d off with the bad news items of ops cancelled, long waiting times at A and E, ambulances times etc etc ad infinitum - but all that must be more than compens...

Too old to drive?.......

Totally agree, Philip. That's how I got my French licence, 25 years ago. The interesting point is that the old pink paper licences were issued for life , whereas the new plastic ones are valid for ten years (or so I am told); so if you have an old one, and you are over 60, don't be persuaded to tra...

Too old to drive?.......

I'll check it out, but in France there is no check for age limit on driving. Certainly my French licence (grudgingly exchanged for my UK licence back when the French insisted you couldn't drive here without a French licence) has nothing marked on it under the validity heading. Frightening when you s...

GTC corner weights

Hi, Dennis. Only just picked up on this. When I was preparing the GTC for French reg I had her weighed. If the notes are correct, the weight on the front axle was 680kg, and on the back axle 560kg. Would it be TOO simple to assume that the weight on each front wheel is therefore 340kg, and on each ...

GTC corner weights

Thanks, Mark. "Propulsion, moteur central avant, donc". Sounds a bit of a mouthful to me. Perhaps I'll just stick to "a plastic car never imported into France ....."

GTC corner weights

Excellent! Must find out how to say that in French (James, Oldconn? - moteur central?) so that I can add that in to my standard explanation of what the GTC is.

GTC corner weights

680kg front and 560kg rear equates to 55/45% weight distribution. And with the engine behind the front wheels, does that make the Scimitar mid-engine?????

Too old to drive?.......

Not sure how tongue in cheek Oldconn is there, but he does have a point - as I experienced earlier this year, almost causing our beloved Rover BRM to be written off by the b.st..d insurance company. Cruising home from the supermarket at dusk, headlights on and well under the 90 kph limit. A 4x4 pull...

Intermittent electrical problem GTC

Latest. Don't talk too loud, but I think, to quote Inspector Clouseau "The problem is solvèd". I got a good used distributor from QRG, put it back in the right place - more by luck than judgement - and have now completed about 4 hours high-temp running without an issue. I had already changed the ele...

Distributor GTC manual

Phil it WILL have the pencil drive. OR did you mean check the drive for wear??. You will need a magnet on a rod to get the drive out as its not connected to the dizzy, a mirror on a stick helps too. And be careful not to drop it in the wrong place when replacing it. Mark My heart sinks! I seem to r...
