I used a ford escort sensor in the original Speedo drive using an adaptor from parts supplier burton

The standard Smith's temperature worry guage is supplied by a regulator to keep the voltage at 10 volts make sure this is actually putting out 10 volts and not 12 volts as this will make it read higher .

Yes you don't have a earth connection to the points or the points themselves are not conducting .check for a decent earth using an ohmmeter from the points plate to the chassis or the battery negative .this should read as a closed circuit.

If you're referring to holes in the body (used for the screws to retain, for example, light units) then they are too big as standard, and the "bits of plastic" may be the mangled remains of the lokuts (like these in this link ) which are the original fitting. 4mm or 6mm your choice ( I would use 6mm ) fluorescent are low current so no real need for led as they are pricy at he moment. I have 15 fluorescent in five banks of three no problem even with a welder and compressor as long as you don't run them together.

Acuspark is designed for conventional coils as David said .the coil you have there is s modern version for cars with ECU ignition .try an older style coil as David advises and all should be well .the old ones are oil filled whereas the one you have is not
